Classes & Volunteer Opportunities
Urban Farm - Garden Private Classes & Consultations
Thinking about raising goats, chickens or bees in your backyard? Need help picking breeds or developing a plan for housing? We will come to you and help you design and implement a plan that works for your space, goals and budget.
We can teach you how to trim hooves and wings, how to use herbs and natural therapies to manage herd or flock and help you develop personalized resources for the long term success of your urban farm. “Have a farm they said, it will be fun.” Well, it can be fun when you are prepared and empowered.
Two - hour consults $75.00.
Folks who take our classes get a 10% discount on animals purchased at our farm.
One Day Classes
We have led classes in Botanical Medicine, Herbalism, Gardening, Farming, Homesteading, Seasonal & Earth-Based Ritual and Holistic Wellness since 1997. At one time we offered a 300 hour Botanical Medicine Intensive Program but these days we offer occasional one-day classes through Portland Community College and Chemeketa Community College as well as here at the farm. A sample list of classes offered can be seen at the North West School of Herbalism.
Volunteer
We are always accepting serious inquiries from adults interested in volunteering on a farm. For those who want to learn how to garden & farm this is an opportunity to dive in and learn by doing. Volunteers will work along side seasoned farmers with diverse interests and backgrounds. There is no charge for this training, you will help us out around the farm and we will help you learn. We have room for an RV for those who wish to stay overnight occasionally. Or, if you live locally and want to volunteer daily that works too. We will provide some meals, and we're pretty good cooks too.
The volunteer course of study is designed for people who wish to work one-on-one or in small cohorts with an experienced practicing herbalist & farmer. Fashioned in an old-world style of hands-on training with knowledge handed down from mentor to protegee there will be less of an emphasis on organized “classes” but moreover on individual or small get-togethers with other dedicated naturalists, gardeners, homesteaders, etc., all coming together with the mutual intention of learning from and with each other.
This is a non-paid position. It is adult non-credit life enriching education. This is not a degree program. And, diploma, degree or certificate aside, what one gets out of this kind of experience is directly proportional to what one puts into it. This is an interactive style of learning, not just the teacher lecturing and the student taking notes. This is get-your-hands-dirty, get-up-at-dawn, break-your-back kind of work but that is farming and as exhausting as it can be, it can also be a very rewarding and enriching experience.
The volunteer will benefit by learning segments of row crop gardening, orchard management, poultry & goat husbandry, canning & preserving, beekeeping, medicinal herbalism, cooking and other related homesteading skills. We have a good time living this life and enjoy sharing it with diverse people. We especially love gourmet cooking, wine & beer tasting, story telling and listening to music. Interested?
Current Volunteer Options: we are looking to fill one or two volunteer positions: hours by arrangement. Aside from a respect for or an adherence to Organic and Sustainable practices the criteria will primarily be:
1) Local folks who want to spend a day or two a week working on a farm but who are not seeking housing. OR
2) Folks who have a self contained housing vehicle - trailer, RV, etc.
3) People who will NOT be bringing pets to the farm. Sorry, we are sure we'd love your critter but we really cannot accommodate any more animals.
4) People who are compassionate about healthy living and caring for our world in a noninvasive way, who have a sense of humor and who are consistent & reliable.
5) Aside from regular and pre-scheduled work days also must be available during cherry and lavender harvest. Sometimes these are in the same week and it is usually at the end of June or beginning of July. And, be available during kidding season February - April.
If this is you, please email us for the application. We look forward to hearing from you.
