Pigs
We raise Gloucestershire Old Spot pigs. They are a rare heritage pig, also known as the GOS. Originally from Gloucestershire, England, they are known to graze gently on the farm’s pasture dining on whatever may come their way, especially favoring the apple. Since they were raised on pasture, not in pens, they became known as the quintessential orchard pig. Old sayings mused that their black spots came from the apples dropping from the tree and landing on their backs. In any case luckily for our GOS, MisFit Farm has many apple trees! Traditionally they were also fed whey, the milky watery leftover from cheese production. Since we have goats and make cheese our pigs also get to feast on whey weekly.
Our pigs are our green rototillers and master composters of the farm. They are quite adept at rooting and turning soil over as they search for worms and other tasty treats in the soil. Since we farm organically, we have plenty of worms to share with the pigs. And, we have plenty of garden beds that they help us with by turning the soil and rooting out the weeds. They are quite friendly and enjoy hanging out with the other barnyard critters.
Aside from garden bounty we feed them Certified Organic sprouted grains, No soy and No corn. They love apples, pears, mushrooms, avocados and hard boiled eggs as well as hazelnuts and walnuts. Because of their diverse & pastured diet their meat is supposedly some of the most desirable available and this is the only pork eaten by the British Royal Family. In March 2013, a GOS from the breeder where our pigs came from played a staring role in the Seattle Cochon 555 competition.

I am not a pig farmer. The pigs had a great time, but I didn't make any money......Willie Nelson
